India has nearly three million Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which constitute more than 80 percent of the total number of industrial enterprises in the country. They contribute nearly 35 percent in direct export and 45 percent in the overall export from the country.The concept of cluster development offers a new insight into the potential role of SMEs in enhancing their access to new technology. To make their products globally competitive, Indian SMEs need to upgrade their technology. The problems faced by the SMEs, particularly in accessing technology and maintaining competitiveness, are formidable. The ECO-III Project worked in four clusters in Punjab & Gujarat to propagate the cross cutting technologies in these SME clusters.
Objective
To build capacity at the state level related to different facets of energy efficiency so as to ensure widespread adoption of energy efficient practices
Accomplishments
- Developed SME Cluster Analysis for Textile Units (Ludhiana and Ahmedabad), Cross-Cutting Technologies (Ahmedabad), Steel Re-Rolling Mills (Mandi Gobindgarh), and conducted Pre-Investigative Studies in four clusters, Pre-Feasibility Studies of three Steel Re-Rolling Mills and three Investment Grade Proposals (for Ludhiana and Ahmedabad clusters) were undertaken
- A Business Model was evolved as a follow up of the studies for promoting Cross Cutting Technologies (at Vatva, Ahmedabad). Key stakeholders included Vatva Industry Association, Equipment suppliers, GEDA and NPC. A series of events (review meetings, workshops, and exhibitions) were organized with active support of the association and equipment suppliers
- Prepared the report “Implementation of Energy Efficiency in SME Clusters” highlighting ECO-III experiences in four SME clusters and suggestions emanating from the same
- Initiated discussion with World Bank to dovetail findings of SME activities and the implementation model with the WB/GEF supported program for the SME sector
- Developed SME Case Study based on the lessons learned from implementing energy efficiency in SMEs
