Energy use in buildings is one of the fastest growing components of energy demand in India. A few studies on building energy use suggest that 20-40% energy could be saved through cost-effective energy-efficient interventions in the existing buildings. Similar energy saving potential exists in street lighting and water pumping facilities of municipalities/urban local bodies. ECO-III Project has been providing technical assistance to the concerned authorities in Gujarat and Punjab to initiate several activities to enhance energy efficiency in existing buildings and municipalities. The Project has developed ‘Energy Assessment Guide for Commercial Buildings’, and is currently developing framework of energy benchmarks of commercial buildings in India in association with BEE.
